The smoking area in the optimistically-named ‘piazza’ outside the British Library is empty apart from the builders from the Eurostar terminus next door, lounging in their hard hats and eyeing up the academic totty. The crowd waiting outside in the morning is twice the size that it was in December. By 11am the reading rooms are full. The spotted dick and custard in the cafeteria remains untouched.
